Sunny 16: Starting point for manual exposure estimation on a sunny day
To illustrate the Sunny 16 as a baseline for quick manual exposure estimation on a clear day, and to be clear that it is not a light meter replacement for all weather, scenes or films.
f/16 baseline on a clear day
Nikon's official photography glossary describes Sunny 16 as a reference for quickly estimating exposure on a sunny day: Use f/16 and set the shutter to the stop closest to the reciprocal of film ISO. ISO 100, for example, starts at 1/125th of a second. It is an estimation guide and does not guarantee ideal exposure for every light, subject reflectivity, film or shooting target; cloudy days, shadows, indoors and situations that require precise exposure should be measured separately or adjusted according to the actual picture. 〔G-SUN-01〕
